As expected, Avatar: Fire and Ash dominated the weekend box office, igniting with more than $89 million in its opening outing. The film is poised to claim another weekend victory, even as a pair of newcomers arrive looking to chip away at Avatar’s box office haul.
Opening on Christmas Day is the Jack Black—Paul Rudd action-comedy, Anaconda. The film follows a documentary crew that ventures into one of the world’s most remote jungles to shoot an amateur remake of the 1997 cult classic Anaconda. When a massive anaconda unexpectedly appears, the production quickly spirals into a fight for survival. Directed by Tom Gormican, the film will debut in approximately 3,509 theaters
Also opening in wide release on Thursday is the biographical drama Song Sung Blue. Launching in 2,578 movie houses, the film stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as two down-on-their-luck musicians who form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band, proving it’s never too late to find love and follow your dreams.
Expanding from just six theaters last week to 2,668 this week, the sports drama Marty Supreme makes a major leap. The film stars Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a young man with an overlooked dream who endures immense hardship in his relentless pursuit of greatness. Marty Supreme earned $875,000 in its opening weekend and is expected to bring in significantly more over the holiday frame.
Note: Due to the holiday, not all films adjust their theater count from Thursday to Friday. Listed are the theater count changes that have been reported by their respective studios.
