Captain America: Brave New World opened last weekend and soared over its competitors, taking in $88.84m over the three-day weekend, and $100.02m over the four-day Holiday weekend. Claiming second place at the box office, Paddington in Peru grossed $12.76m over the three-day weekend and $16.01m over the four-day weekend. Captain America: Brave New World will remain the widest release in its second weekend across 4,105 theaters.
Starting out in 3,200 theaters is the Oz Perkins-directed horror-comedy, The Monkey. Based on the 1980 short story by Stephen King, the film adaptation follows twin brothers Bill and Hal as they find their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, and a series of gruesome deaths start. The siblings decide to throw the toy away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years.
Also opening in wide release is Lionsgate’s The Unbreakable Boy. The biographical drama, written and directed by Jon Gunn, follows Austin, a boy with both a rare brittle-bone disease and autism. But what makes Austin truly unique is his joyous, funny, life-affirming worldview that transforms and unites everyone around him. The boy’s father changes his life as he comes to see Austin not as the symbol of something broken but the triumph of indestructible spirits. Based on the book The Unbreakable Boy: A Father’s Fear, a Son’s Courage, and a Story of Unconditional Love the film will open in 1,687 cinemas.
Making its way into 200 movie houses is Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants. This Chinese historical martial arts film in the wuxia genre is based on chapters 34 to 40 of Jin Yong’s novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes, following the martial artist Guo Jing during the Southern Song dynasty.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is second place at the box office as Paddington in Peru is retaining its opening count from last weekend, still widely available in 3,890 cinemas. Occupying the fourth place spot is Dog Man in 3,179 theaters. Lastly, Heart Eyes is widely available in 3,102 movie houses.
Looking ahead to next weekend, we see yet another two films making their way into theaters, this time with the release of the survival thriller Last Breath, as well as the Indian comedy-drama film, Superboys of Malegaon, with the former projected to arrive in 2,500 cinemas and the latter in 400 cinemas.
