Condemned: Criminal Origins

The modern horror gaming landscape is heavily geared toward streaming. Many of the biggest releases in recent years have been asymmetrical multiplayer games designed to create memorable moments for viewers. While Dead by Daylight has managed to thrive, many of its competitors haven’t stood the test of time. Friday the 13th, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre all tried to capture the same audience, but none matched Dead by Daylight’s staying power. As a result, many of these games have shut down or faded into obscurity, leaving the horror genre feeling less diverse than it once was.

That is what makes Condemned: Criminal Origins such a refreshing experience.

Released for Xbox 360 in 2005, Condemned: Criminal Origins is a first-person survival horror game that throws in a hefty dose of psychological horror. It also borrows ideas from crime thrillers, which helps it stand out. The gameplay is divided into two distinct modes: forensic investigation and beating the hell out of anyone trying to kill you.

You play as Ethan Thomas, an FBI investigator tracking down serial killers in the crime-ridden city of Metro. Instead of simply pointing you toward the next objective, the game lets you investigate crime scenes. You collect fingerprints, analyze blood spatter, identify particulates, and piece together evidence before moving on. It may sound simple, but back in 2005, there really wasn’t much else doing this. Honestly, there still isn’t.

Then there’s the combat. If you’re expecting to mow through enemies with assault rifles, you’re playing the wrong game. Ammunition is scarce, so most fights involve grabbing whatever is lying nearby. Pipes, axes, sledgehammers, pieces of rebar. Every fight feels desperate, which fits the game’s atmosphere perfectly. You are not an action hero. You’re simply trying to survive.

The story starts out as a straightforward serial killer investigation before things start to spiral. Ethan’s cases become weirder, reality becomes less reliable, and you start wondering whether what you’re seeing is actually happening.

Condemned: Criminal Origins

The atmosphere is where Condemned really shines. Everything feels dirty, abandoned, and just a little bit unsafe. Whether you’re exploring an old department store, crawling through abandoned apartments, or wandering a subway station you should not be alone in, the game keeps you on edge. You can see inspiration drawn from The Silence of the Lambs, Saw, 28 Days Later, and other late ’90s/early-aughts horror movies throughout, but it never feels like it’s copying them.

There is also one section involving mannequins. I am not going to spoil it. If you know, you know. If you don’t, it’s worth playing the game just for that sequence alone. It is one of those horror moments that sticks with you.

If you have never played Condemned: Criminal Origins, I would definitely recommend tracking down a copy. The game is backward-compatible on Xbox consoles, although it has been delisted digitally, so a physical copy is your best bet (looking at you, Sony).

Sometimes all a horror game needs is a creepy abandoned building, a rusty pipe, and a mystery worth solving. Condemned: Criminal Origins understood that over 20 years ago and is still worth playing today. And who knows? Maybe if enough people go back and play it, somebody will finally give this series the remaster—or the remake—it deserves.
