House of 1000 Corpses has been on disc since 2003 and has never been on 4K. It gets there inside Rob Zombie’s Firefly Trilogy, an eight-disc Lionsgate set that reached shelves on October 13 carrying all three Firefly films and two discs of legacy extras.
The three films run 312 minutes together. The Devil’s Rejects carries the theatrical cut on 4K and the unrated cut on Blu-ray, and 3 From Hell is unrated on both formats. The digital copy runs through Movies Anywhere.
Three Commentaries and Two Making-Of Docs
House of 1000 Corpses brings a feature-length commentary by Zombie and archival behind-the-scenes footage. The Devil’s Rejects carries 30 Days in Hell, the feature-length making-of, plus commentary tracks. 3 From Hell has the four-part To Hell and Back and a second Zombie commentary. Two further discs hold legacy bonus material from the earlier releases.
The physical extras are a collectible poster, a set of art cards, and a hardcover photography book Zombie pulled from his own archive. The set is on Amazon now.
Lions Gate Took It Third
The upgrade lands on a film its own studio would not put out. Universal paid for House of 1000 Corpses, shot in 2000, then refused to release it when its head of production decided the cut was headed for an NC-17. Zombie bought the rights back. MGM signed on and set an October 2002 date before dropping the film. Lions Gate took it third and released a version cut for an R on April 11, 2003, where it opened second behind Anger Management and finished with roughly $16.8 million worldwide. Zombie has kept feeding the archive ever since, down to a rarely seen image from the original ending.
Sid Haig Had Five Days Left
3 From Hell played three unrated nights through Fathom Events beginning September 16, 2019. Sid Haig died on September 21, five days later, and it was the last of his films to reach an audience. His part had already been reduced: Zombie rebuilt the role around Richard Brake after Haig’s health kept him from the full shoot, leaving Captain Spaulding to the opening news footage and a trial that ends in a lethal injection.
The Devil’s Rejects is the one that earns the format. It is the best-shot film Zombie has made, and the Free Bird finale still plays like the end of a western.
