Trans rights activists crashed the red carpet ahead of a Harry Potter play at London’s Palace Theatre on Thursday, October 15.
The protesters targeted author J.K. Rowling over her controversial views on transgender rights. One demonstrator wore a T-shirt that read, “Rowling money kills.” Security quickly removed the individuals from the venue.
The demonstration took place as guests gathered for the theatrical event, which brought renewed attention to the controversy surrounding Rowling’s public statements. Her comments on gender identity have drawn criticism from human rights advocates, as the author’s public stance towards transgender people has grown more inflammatory.
What happened at the Palace Theatre during the Harry Potter gala?
Footage shared by the Daily Mirror shows the activists rushing the red carpet before security intervened. The protesters, in masks and hats, laid down during the demonstration. Security personnel subsequently removed them from the area.
Several television personalities attended the gala, including Vanessa Feltz, Richard Arnold, Anne Hegerty, and Angellica Bell. The event also marked the introduction of a new presentation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The production runs for almost three hours.
The stage production continues the story of Rowling’s original books, following Harry Potter and his friends into adulthood. Since its West End debut in 2016, the play has remained a significant part of the franchise’s theatrical legacy.
However, Rowling’s transphobia has created divisions among fans and prominent figures associated with the franchise. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have publicly voiced support for the transgender community, among other Harry Potter stars who have distanced themselves from the author’s comments.
Rowling’s view on transgender rights continues to hang like a shadow over the Harry Potter franchise. While some fans insist on separating the art from the artist, high-profile protests like this one demonstrate that may be the one thing there’s no magic spell for.
