DC Announces ‘Superman’ Spinoff TV Series Starring Jimmy Olsen

The next DC TV series — and Superman spinoff — is set.

HBO Max just announced that they are about to start production on a show called The People v. Gorilla Grodd. Based on their description of the series, which is an eight-episode show, it sounds like a two-hander for Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd, the hyperintelligent ape who has historically been one of the Justice League’s most persistent antagonists in DC Comics. On the show, Grodd will be played by Jimmy Tatro.

HBO Max describes the series this way:

A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part “true” crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.

In addition to Gisondo reprising his role from James Gunn’s 2025 film of Superman, The People v. Gorilla Grodd will also feature several other members of the Daily Planet staff from that film, including Steve Lombard (Beck Bennett), Cat Grant (Mikaela Hoover), and Perry White (Wendell Pierce).

The show was announced with this graphic, a faux press release from the Daily Planet that says the show will explore “Metropolis’ most infamous murder trial” while revealing a “lesser-seen side” of Grodd via Olsen and his “unprecedented access” to him at “Stryker’s Island Pentitentiary.”

DC Studios is currently releasing their latest live-action TV series set within the new DC Universe, Lanterns, every Sunday night on HBO Max. That follows the second season of Peacemaker. DC has also announced a Booster Gold TV show, although development on that one has reportedly been very slow. And Gisondo will also play Jimmy Olsen in Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. That film is due in theaters on July 9, 2027.
