Republican senator Thom Tillis admits he regrets voting for Pete Hegseth as the Pentagon’s Defense Secretary. Tillis made the revelation in his book, “How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents”. Hegseth has been in the headlines after fellow Republican Thomas Massie pushed for his impeachment.
Thom Tillis says confirming Pete Hegseth became the biggest regret of his career
Thom Tillis recently confessed in his upcoming memoir that he regrets voting for Pete Hegseth to the Pentagon.
Tillis revealed he knew about the allegations against Hegseth but didn’t want to be “the lone voice in the wilderness” speaking out against his appointment. He wrote that others shared similar views on Hegseth but “agreed to go along with the early demands of the Trump team no matter how ridiculous they were.” (via AP News)
The Republican added that the majority didn’t want to question Hegseth’s appointment as Defense Secretary because they feared it would affect their political careers. However, Tillis said they now see that “things have gone way too far.” Moreover, Tillis wrote that the war would end only if Trump decides to get the Defense Secretary “the hell out of the way.” Tillis also shared that he was one of the few Republicans who asked Hegseth the “tough questions” before he took command of the Pentagon.
Currently, Hegseth has faced immense criticism after Republican Thomas Massie passed an impeachment resolution against him. Massie made the push after alleging that Hegseth didn’t handle the conflict with Iran properly and also committed constitutional violations. However, Hegseth avoided the vote after House Speaker Mike Johnson sent the House into an early recess before the midterm elections.
Tillis backed the impeachment resolution while speaking to reporters last month and said, “He needs to go, whether it’s impeachment or the most expedient route — just the president to replace him — would be great.” (via The Hill)
