Theater counts: Freakier Friday doubles down, claiming the widest release in its second weekend

Newcomer Weapons blasted into first place at last weekend’s box office, firing up $43.5 million in its opening frame. The action-thriller outgunned second-place finisher Freakier Friday by roughly $15 million over the three-day span. Both films pushed the former chart-topper, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, down to third. Now in its third weekend, Fantastic Four added just under $13 million, bringing its 17-day domestic total to over $230 million.

Leading the charge this weekend is Nobody 2, the sequel to 2021’s surprise hit, Nobody. Bob Odenkirk returns as Hutch Mansell, a former government assassin trying to live a quiet life—until a family retreat turns into a deadly confrontation with a corrupt theme park operator and his shady sheriff. The action-comedy reunites Odenkirk with co-stars Connie Nielsen, RZA, and Christopher Lloyd, while Sharon Stone and Colin Hanks join the franchise for the first time. Nobody 2 will be available in 3,260 theaters.

Also hitting the big screen is the re-release of the 2016 Kaiju film Shin Godzilla, stomping its way back into 1,290 theaters for a limited time. Meanwhile, international audiences can look forward to War 2, the sequel to the Bollywood blockbuster War. Starring Hrithik Roshan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr., the high-octane action flick opens Thursday in 943 North American locations.

Skirting just above the wide release threshold is the psychedelic horror feature Jimmy and Stiggs, debuting in 626 theaters. The film follows down-on-his-luck filmmaker Jimmy, who claims to have been abducted by aliens. Convinced they’re coming back, he recruits his old friend Stiggs to prepare for war. What follows is a nightmarish, hallucinatory plunge into alien encounters, drugs, booze, and all-out carnage.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned Freakier Friday, which kicks off its second week in theaters, maintaining its strong opening count with 3,975 locations. Box office leader Weapons expands its reach, adding 248 theaters for its second weekend, now playing in 3,450 cinemas. The Bad Guys 2 enters its third weekend, dropping 486 locations but still widely available in 3,374 theaters. Finally, The Fantastic Four continues to hold steady, screening in 3,355 venues.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the debut of Honey Don’t, starring Aubrey Plaza, Margaret Qualley, and Chris Evans. The film from Focus Features is expected to start out in approximately 1,200 locations. Also opening in wide release is the survival thriller, Eden, as well as the Chinese blockbuster, Ne Zha 2. We will update those theater counts once they become available.
