Theater counts: Superman ascends to widest release in its second weekend

High-flying Superman opened to a sizable $125 million in its weekend debut, pushing Jurassic World Rebirth down to second place; however, the latter still snagged just over $40 million in its second attempt, finishing out the three-day stretch with a total domestic cume of $232 million. Those films will contend with a trio of newcomers this weekend as Smurfs, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Eddington make their way into theaters.

Arriving in 3,504 cinemas this weekend are the Smurfs. Led by Smurfette, the Smurfs go on a mission into the real world to save Papa Smurf after he is abducted by the evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe. The film, directed by Chris Miller, contains an enormous lead ensemble voice cast led by Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette herself. The animated feature opened last weekend in a handful of overseas territories, including Australia, where it tallied up $2 million of its $2.46 million earnings. The film will add another 56 international markets this weekend in conjunction with its North American debut.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer. The horror picture is a sequel to the 1997 film of the same name, which went on to score over $72 million at the domestic box office over its long 23-week run. The original feature spawned two follow-up films prior to the latest, including 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer as well as the 2006 direct-to-video title, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. Arriving in 3,206 movie houses, the most recent installment in the franchise follows five friends who inadvertently cause a deadly car accident and make a pact to cover it up rather than face the consequences. As they try to move on, a stalker sends them taunting messages about their crime. Realizing that the stalker is imitating a legendary serial killer, they turn to two survivors of the Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.

Making its way into 2,111 theaters this weekend is the Ari Aster-directed movie, Eddington. Set in New Mexico, the film is a black comedy Neo-Western about a standoff between a small-town sheriff and the mayor during the COVID crisis of 2020. Another film with a star-studded cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler, among many highly regarded Hollywood talents.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the current box office leader, as Superman takes the top spot, adding 140 venues to its opening week count for a total of 4,275 theaters for its second weekend. Jurassic World Rebirth drops below 4,000 locations this weekend but is still widely available, beginning its third weekend in 3,854 theaters. Lastly, the $142 million domestic earner, F1: The Movie, will be available for audiences in 3,094 locations this weekend.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The latest feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise is projected to start out in approximately 4,000 locations.
