Some of your iPhone’s storage is spoken for, but it has an important purpose.

iPhone storage is more of a concern than ever before. Costly storage upgrades have always been a way for Apple to wring more cash out of buyers, but with memory prices through the roof, you can easily find yourself squeezed to the limit, trying to balance the demands of growing app and file sizes with keeping your budget reasonable. And that’s before considering the whopping $2,000 entry price of the iPhone Duo.

A common complaint is that before you even install anything on an iPhone, a lot of space is taken up by two elements: iOS itself, and a category labeled System Datawhen you checkSettings > General > iPhone Storage. On 128GB models, it’s easy for these items to take up nearly half of your storage, as they do on my iPhone 16 Pro.

So what exactly goes into this mysteriously category, and how big is it supposed to be on an iPhone? Though you can never eliminate it completely, you also have a fast way to reduce its footprint.

Explaining the mystery of your iPhone’s System Data

Essentially, System Data (Other in older iOS releases) is an umbrella term for files iOS needs to run, but that don’t constitute the core of the operating system. That includes data like caches, logs and credentials, as well as any additional fonts, keyboards and Siri voices you’ve downloaded. If you’ve downloaded an iOS update but have yet to install it, that’s going to show up in System Data as well.

As you might imagine, then, trying to pin down a “normal” System Data size is difficult to do. It will depend on not just how much you’ve customized iOS, but the apps you’re using and your specific activity in them. On top of this, iOS occasionally performs automatic cleanup, attempting to free up space without impacting performance.

In practice, System Data fluctuates wildly. While it might be just a few gigabytes one day, it can later expand into the dozens of gigabytes, then fall back. Some folks reportseeing it grow into the triple digits.

This is an issue, since you might not have enough room to download new files or apps, apropos of nothing you’ve done. If you were already pushing storage to the limit, iOS might not have enough room to install updates or otherwise expand its temporary files (short of app removal or automatic cleanup). When any device is short on cache or swap space, it has to take special measures, like shutting down background apps that would normally be suspended for quicker resuming.

How to reclaim System Data space

You can never eliminate System Data completely, and you wouldn’t want to. While it’s not iOS proper, it’s still vital to how your iPhone works. Having to load content fresh for every app, every time would dramatically slow your experience down.

What you can do is reboot your phone by holding the side button and eithervolume button, then swiping Slide to Power Off. After a minute, hold the side button again to power back on. Strictly speaking, this isn’t guaranteed to do anything. But from experience, this should force System Data to shrink. You’re clearing at least some system caches, and either halting or restarting background processes.

Remember that this is a ultimately a short-term fix. If storage is so tight that you need to think about System Data, it’s time to start deleting unused apps and files to declutter your iPhone, including duplicates of old photos and videos. You might also want to take deeper measures to clear space, like downloading fewer playlists or videos from streaming services.
