Josh Brolin wanted to quit Ridley Scott‘s new sci-fi movie on the first day of filming. The upcoming project also features Jacob Elordi and Margaret Qualley alongside the acclaimed Hollywood star.
Why did Josh Brolin want to quit Ridley Scott’s new movie?
Actor Josh Brolin will be seen in Ridley Scott’s next movie, titled The Dog Stars, a live-action adaptation of Peter Heller’s 2012 novel of the same name. Although he is now part of its cast, the actor recently revealed that he initially wanted to leave the project.
Brolin had arrived on the set of The Dog Stars, in Italy, after back-to-back shooting for his recent movies such as Weapons, Wake Up Dead Man, and The Running Man. He was expecting to have some rehearsal sessions, but it wasn’t the case on Day 1. “Ridley was talking a lot of stories and not really rehearsing,” he said while giving the reason for his frustration during an interview with Empire.
The early impressions made Brolin “really scared. I went back, called my agent and said, ‘I want out. Something’s really wrong, and I’ve got to get the f**k out of here.’” However, his agent told him to take a day to settle in. It seems Brolin’s reaction was a result of Scott’s unconventional moviemaking process.

It took him some time to adjust, but it was all worth it in the end. “It took about a day or two for me to really embrace that, and then I got super into it because it was stratospherically creative and stratospherically dangerous,” he added.
Following 2024’s Gladiator II, The Dog Stars will be the first movie from Ridley Scott, and it also received a trailer earlier this month. Besides Brolin, Elordi, and Qualley, the film also includes Allison Janney, Benedict Wong, and Guy Pearce.
Scott is also the producer on The Dog Stars alongside Michael Pruss, Mark L. Smith, and Cliff Roberts. The executive producers on the movie include Lily Brooks-Dalton, Brandon Scott Smith, Heller, and Aidan Elliott.
The Dog Stars releases in theaters on August 28, 2026.
