Chris Spatola, a former basketball analyst for ESPN and SiriusXM and son-in-law of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, passed away suddenly on Monday, September 21, at the age of 47.
“Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster,” ESPN wrote in a statement. “He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Jason Evans of “The Duke Basketball Roundup” also shared a statement from the school on Spatola’s death.
“We write to you to share the incredibly difficult news that Chris Spatola passed away unexpectedly yesterday,” part of the statement said. “Many of you have gotten to know Chris over the years as our funny and sharp-witted K Academy emcee and hugely passionate and dedicated coach.”
Spatola was married to Coach K’s daughter, Jamie, with whom he had three children.
Evans also shared a statement from the Krzyzewski Family.
“There are no words to adequately express our heartbreak over the loss of our beloved Chris Spatola,” the statement from the Krzyzewski family read. “Chris served our country, was a devoted husband and father, and was such an important part of our family. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, thoughts, and prayers we have received during this incredibly difficult time. We respectfully ask for privacy as our entire family, particularly Jamie and her three beautiful children, grieve and process this unimaginable loss.”
Others in the sports community began sharing their own tributes as word got around of Spatola’s passing.
“With heavy hearts this morning, we mourn the passing of Army Basketball alum Chris Spatola ‘02,” The Army Men’s Basketball wrote on X. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Be Thou at Peace.”

ACC Network founding host and former Charlotte sports radio personality Mark Packer also shared a tribute on X, writing that he hasn’t slept since he found out the news of Spatola’s passing. “It is a reminder to all of us that every day is precious. Tell the special people in your life that you love them,” Packer concluded.
Nick Jones, head men’s basketball coach at Friends University, wrote on X that he was grateful he was able to spend a few summers learning from Spatola at Duke. Jones wrote: “One of the best people in the business.”
“So many people who knew Chris Spatola better than I did have posted amazing words about the person he was and his love for his family, this country and the great game of basketball,” Emmett Davis, a former college basketball coach, wrote on X. “His tragic loss is a reminder that life is precious. Tell your family today you love them.”
Spatola was a fixture across airwaves for more than a decade and built his career at West Point. Before transitioning to media, he was a four-year starter for Army — where Coach K originally launched his own legendary coaching path — and subsequently served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army. He later returned as a member of Coach K’s staff at Duke, helping guide the Blue Devils to a national championship in 2010 along with a roster that included current head coach Jon Scheyer.
