The cancellation of Wonder Man Season 2 has enraged fans of the MCU show. The Yahya Abdul Mateen II-starrer’s next season was greenlit for production in March of this year. However, recent reports have revealed that Disney+ has revoked it.
The reason behind the cancellation is not yet revealed; however, according to sources, a writer’s room for the greenlit season was never opened. Moreover, the writers of the show, Andrew Guest and Destin Daniel Cretton, have carried on with other projects.
Fans took to X to express their disappointment over the revocation. User @captaincupkick posted, “I don’t think I’ve ever felt more seen than watching Wonder Man. That first season is so special to me and seemed like the perfect show for Marvel to run for years to come. It feels like robbery to not get another season.”
Another user, @IAMNJERA wrote, “Canceling ‘Wonder Man’ after already giving it the green light AND after Yahya’s Emmy nom is a huge slap in the face.”
Meanwhile, @postmurdock added, “Wonder man got more character development/growth and quality dialog writing in the span of a couple shorts episodes than most of the MCU projects combined. Genuinely how do you fumble a writer room like this.”
Some users took to the platform to express their disappointment and bafflement with Marvel. For instance, @ThomasStorai stated, “The cancellation of Wonder Man doesn’t make any sense. It was well received by the public and the press. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II even received an Emmy nom. The series was renewed, so why just cancel it now without giving any explanation? This isn’t a good look for Marvel right now”
Wonder Man Season 2 may not be happening, but Wonder Man could still return to the MCU
Although the series has been canceled, Abdul-Mateen II may return as the character in other MCU projects. This statement was provided to Variety by an individual with knowledge of the situation.
The MCU is currently in a phase that has many crossovers between characters from all the universes. So, although his return in Avengers: Doomsday is not revealed, he still could make an appearance in Secret Wars or the Shang-Chi and Spider-Man projects. However, this is not officially confirmed by the studio.
Guest is currently working on filming Uncanny Valley and executive producing Community: The Move, which is under pre-production. Meanwhile, Cretton is currently directing the live-action of Naruto while his Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to hit theaters this Friday.
