At the onset of Covid lockdown, celebrated director Mike Flanagan teamed up with the fine folks at Rotten Tomatoes to share some under-seen horror movie recommendations. I have reported on several of the director’s noteworthy picks here previously and I am back with another exciting suggestion for you today.
This time around, Mr. Flanagan is extolling the praises of the Iranian vampire flick, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. The Oculus director was blown away by this 2014 chiller, so much so that he counts himself envious of anyone who has yet to experience it for the first time.
If you remain amongst the uninducted, fear not, dear reader. You can scope the flick on Kanopy (which is free to almost anyone with a library card or college ID) as of the publication of this post. “Ana Lily Amirpour is a badass,” says Flanagan. “This vampire tale is impossible to categorize and utterly unique. This is a genre-bending tour-de-force, a hypnotic journey through the desolate streets of a dreamscape. Even accurately describing the film as a ‘black and white, Persian vampire-Western’ doesn’t do it justice. If you haven’t seen it, I’m jealous … you’re in for an unforgettable treat.”
The setup is as follows: Residents of a worn-down Iranian city encounter a skateboarding vampire (played by Sheila Vand) who preys on men who disrespect women.
