The Conjuring Series at HBO Max Has a Showrunner, a Writers Room and Almost No Answers

The Conjuring Series at HBO Max Has a Showrunner, a Writers Room and Almost No Answers

The Conjuring: Last Rites closed the book on Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s Ed and Lorraine Warren, and it did so with the kind of numbers that guarantee a franchise keeps moving. Warner Bros. has not slowed down since. There is a prequel dated for 2027, and there is still a television series in development at HBO Max that almost nobody can say anything concrete about.

That series has been in the works since April 2023, when Warner Bros. Discovery announced it during the presentation that introduced the Max rebrand, before the service reverted to the HBO Max name in 2025. The description then was a drama series that would continue the story established in the feature films. Three and a half years later, that sentence is still the most detailed official plot information available.

The Conjuring Series Finally Has a Showrunner

The project spent roughly two and a half years without a public creative lead. That changed in September 2025, when Variety reported that Nancy Won had joined as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Deadline reported the same hire.

Won’s television background is worth noting because it is not strictly horror. She wrote for Supernatural and Marvel’s Jessica Jones, then moved into prestige drama with Little Fires Everywhere and Tiny Beautiful Things, and more recently worked on Apple’s Sunny. That is a resume built on character work as much as genre mechanics, which is a reasonable thing to keep in mind when guessing at tone, though it is not a substitute for an actual announcement.

Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires are attached as writers. Both come out of the Marvel television pipeline. Cameron’s credits include WandaVision, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night and Agatha All Along. Squires worked on WandaVision and Agatha All Along as well, plus The Acolyte and Gen V. Between the three of them, the writing team leans heavily toward serialized supernatural storytelling with a strong character spine.

Peter Safran remains attached as an executive producer, and James Wan’s Atomic Monster is involved in producing alongside Warner Bros. Television. Safran and Wan have been the constants of this franchise since 2013, so their involvement is continuity rather than news.

What Will The Conjuring Series Actually Be About?

Here is the honest answer. Officially, we know one thing. The series continues the story established in the films.

That is it.

As of August 31, 2026, there has been no announced cast, no premiere date, no episode count, no confirmed setting or time period, and no plot synopsis beyond that original 2023 description. Warner Bros. has not said whether the Warrens appear, whether the series follows their case files, whether it centers on entirely new characters, or whether it connects to any of the spinoff properties. There has also been no public confirmation of a formal series order, which matters, because development and greenlight are not the same thing.

Anything beyond that is inference. It is fair to observe that The Conjuring mythology suits television structurally. The films were built on the idea of investigators moving from one haunting to the next, the universe already contains multiple standalone properties, and roughly a dozen hours of story would allow for the kind of slow-building dread that a 110-minute feature usually has to rush. That is analysis. It is not reporting, and nobody has announced an anthology format, a case-of-the-week structure or anything else.

The gap between what has been confirmed and what fans have already decided the show will be is currently pretty wide.

The Conjuring Universe Isn’t Ending

Last Rites was marketed as the finale for the Wilson and Farmiga incarnation of the Warrens, and it performed like an event, grossing close to half a billion dollars worldwide. Ending a lead actor pairing is not the same as ending a franchise, and New Line moved quickly to prove that.

The Conjuring: First Communion is scheduled for September 10, 2027. Garrett Wareing and Amanda Fix will play younger versions of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Rodrigue Huart is directing from a script by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, with Safran producing.

That film is a separate project from the HBO Max series. They share a universe, a studio and a producer, and nothing else has been established publicly. There is no confirmation that the series involves young Ed and Lorraine, Judy Warren, Tony Spera, the Warrens in any form, or any character appearing in First Communion. Treat the prequel as evidence that Warner Bros. is expanding the franchise past Last Rites rather than as a clue about the show.

What the last year has produced is a franchise with a very visible theatrical plan and a television project that has assembled a credible creative team while revealing almost nothing else. The hiring of a showrunner and two writers moved the series past the vaporware stage, which is genuinely meaningful after two years of silence. The next real update would be a series order, a cast or a logline, and until one of those arrives, the biggest open question in The Conjuring Universe is the one HBO Max has not answered.
