Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe are heading to the mountains. The new historical adventure drama explores the ambition, risks, and personal sacrifices involved in attempting to conquer Mount Everest. The film also revisits the challenges climbers faced, whose achievements helped shape mountaineering history.
Tenzing arrives in select theaters today before its global streaming debut on Apple TV on October 16. Directed by Jennifer Peedom, the film features Genden Phuntsok as Tenzing Norgay, Hiddleston as Edmund Hillary, and Dafoe as Colonel John Hunt. The story draws from the 1953 expedition, when Norgay and Hillary reached Everest’s summit on May 29.
How Tenzing brings one of mountaineering’s most famous stories to the big screen
The film focuses on Norgay’s journey, highlighting his determination and expertise to pursue the summit. As a Sherpa mountaineer, he brought essential knowledge of the Himalayan terrain to the climb. His story also offers a closer look at the contributions of Sherpa climbers to expeditions that have shaped mountaineering history.
Hiddleston plays the New Zealand mountaineer who joined Norgay on the final ascent. Dafoe portrays Hunt, who oversees the expedition. Caitríona Balfe also stars as Jill Henderson, the expedition secretary, and Thinley Lhamo plays Dawa, Norgay’s wife.
Beyond the expedition’s objective, the drama explores Norgay’s spiritual connection with Everest, which he regarded as Chomolungma, the sacred mother goddess. Rather than seeing Everest as a peak to conquer, he viewed it as a spiritual pilgrimage. This adds a personal dimension to the climb, contrasting Norgay’s beliefs with the expedition’s ambitions.
Peedom has previously explored the region through Sherpa, her 2015 documentary about the people who support Everest expeditions. With this film, Peedom shifts her focus to Norgay and his role in one of mountaineering’s defining achievements.
Tenzing will reach a wider audience through Apple TV on October 16 after its theatrical run begins. This will offer viewers another perspective on the landmark 1953 expedition.
