‘Odyssey’ No. 1 Over ‘Spider-Man’; ‘Brand New Day’ $2.4B

‘Odyssey’ No. 1 Over ‘Spider-Man’; ‘Brand New Day’ .4B

For the first time since Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened on July 31, Universal and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey can throw a galley parade over the fact that it’s grabbed the No. 1 spot at the global weekend box office with $45.96M WW over the Sony/Marvel Studios’ title’s sixth frame of $44.1M WW. It’s another case of a Tom Holland-Zendaya movie besting another Tom Holland-Zendaya movie.

As we told you, Odyssey became the 17th movie to cross $1 billion at the international box office. With a running global cume of $1.627 billion ($584.7M of that from domestic), the Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Holland ensemble is nearing Jurassic World‘s $1.67 billion worldwide cume to become the highest grossing movie ever for Universal.

The mini-triumph comes in Odyssey‘s eighth weekend with the launch of Japan previews on 62 Imax screens, which rang up $755K. The Imax exclusive run, which has also seen sell-outs similar to the U.S., runs until Sept. 11 when Odyssey goes wide. Odyssey posted an eighth 3-day domestic of $13M with another $32.9M from 84 foreign territories.

Imax drove $22.2M global ticket sales (4-day was $27.2M) for Odyssey, the large format exhibitor’s highest grossing movie of all-time now at $486M. Of that, the foreign weekend is $16.4M, while North America delivered $6.2M over 3-days ($7.7M over 4-days).

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day counts a solid $2.4 billion at the global box office ($1.485B int’l, $917.8M domestic through Sunday), making it the third-highest grossing movie of all time, and it will likely stay there behind Avatar ($2.9B) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.799B). Through Monday, Brand New Day‘s domestic total will stand at $923M. Despite the fact that the movie will be $13.66M away stateside from overtaking Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest grossing movie ever in North America ($936.66M), the delta to best Avengers: Endgame at the global B.O. is too far to cross.

Odyssey had a great fifth weekend in Korea of $7.6M, -33%, for an $80M cume, becoming Universal’s biggest film ever and surpassing Aladdin there to become the fifth-biggest MPA title of all-time. The pic is still No. 1 there.

Odysseus in China added a strong $5.6M this weekend, ranking No. 3 behind two local holdovers, with a cume of $98.4M, still the second-biggest Nolan film of all-time there behind Interstellar. Germany made $2.1M, -23%, for a cume of $59.3M. UK & Ireland enjoyed an excellent hold in weekend 8, -38%, for a No. 2 rank of $2M and a running total of $111.2M. Over the new coming days, Nolan’s best of all-time there will move into the country’s top 10 best ever, overtaking Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Top Gun Maverick. Odyssey was No. 3 in France with $1.6M and a running total near $86M, this despite the end of school holidays prompting a drop in overall cinema-going. The pic is the fourth biggest Hollywood film of all time there and Universal’s biggest film ever. Odyssey had the best hold of any title in Australia, -8%, with the territory boosted by a National Cinema Day on Sunday. The weekend result totaled $1.5M to reach $44.3M, surpassing the lifetime of Avengers: Infinity War to become the No. 11 film of all time, having already become the biggest Uni film ever. Odyssey was No. 2 in Italy with $1M, repping 19% of the market’s business and a cume of $64.1M. It’s the second biggest Hollywood film of all time, and Universal’s biggest film ever.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day saw $18M from its domestic 3-day ($23M over the 4-day Labor Day holiday) and $26.1M from 24,300 screens in 67 markets. The top grossing territories for the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie are China ($230.8M), UK ($130M), Mexico ($89.8M), France ($84.8M), Brazil ($73M), Germany ($66.5M), South Korea ($64.3M), India ($62M), Australia ($59.2M), Spain ($44.4M), Italy ($43.6M), Japan ($34.5M), Argentina ($24.6M), Philippines ($22.6M) and Malaysia ($20.2M).

And to boil down some fun rivalry stats for you:

Odyssey has beat Spider-Man in Korea, France, Italy, Netherlands ($23.7M for Odyssey) and Saudi Arabi ($20.1M for Odyssey).

Brand New Day has beat Odyssey in China, Germany, UK, Australia, India, Spain ($41.8M for Odyssey), Mexico ($37.7M for Odyssey) and Brazil ($23.9M for Odyssey).
