Zach Cregger is taking another step back from Gladys, the upcoming prequel to his smash hit Weapons.
We already knew Cregger wouldn’t be directing the film, but it turns out he’s no longer writing it either.
When Deadline asked Cregger about projects he currently has in development, including the Weapons prequel, he offered a quick correction:
“Oh, actually, Zach Shields is writing [Gladys],” Cregger said. “I was developing the story with him, but he’s writing it.”
That’s a change from what we previously reported here at Dread Central. Back in April, we reported that Cregger and Shields (Krampus, Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) were co-writing the screenplay, with Cregger later confirmed to not be directing.
Cregger clearly hasn’t washed his hands of Aunt Gladys entirely. He helped develop the story with Shields and remains attached as a producer alongside Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon.
And Aunt Gladys isn’t going anywhere.
Weapons became a massive hit for Warner Bros. and New Line, grossing more than $270 million worldwide, while Amy Madigan went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her unforgettable performance as Aunt Gladys.
Madigan is returning for Gladys, which will put the character front and center in a prequel that digs deeper into her story.
As we previously reported, Warner Bros. has already planted a flag for the film, setting Gladys for theatrical release on September 8, 2028.
So Cregger may not be writing or directing, but Aunt Gladys is still coming back to break some twigs.
