Somebody actually called 9-1-1, and Sean Kingston is going to jail. He won’t be “fire burning on the dance floor” anytime soon. The singer, who rose to fame in the late 2000s with songs like Beautiful Girls and Take You There, is going to prison for wire fraud. We’ve got the details on how long he’ll spend behind bars, and why his mom went down with him.
Sean Kingston was convicted of a $1 million fraud scheme alongside his mother
On Friday, August 15, Judge David Leibowitz sentenced Sean to three and a half years behind bars. He’ll have a restitution hearing within the next 90 days.
Sean’s legal troubles began back in May 2024. His mother, Janice Turner, was arrested in a dramatic SWAT raid at Sean’s rented mansion outside of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sean was later arrested in California at an Army training base where he was performing.
According to a report from AP, Sean and his mom used social media from April 2023 to March 2024 to set up purchases for high-end goods. They bought watches, a bulletproof Escalade, an $8,000 custom bed, an LED TV — the list goes on and on. When it came time to pay for the products, Sean and his mom would send over fake wire transfer receipts. They nabbed over $1 million in luxury products with this same scheme.
The mother-son duo was convicted in March 2025, with each of them charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. Last month, his mom received a five-year prison sentence for her role in the scheme.
Sean’s attorney wanted him to get house arrest, but that clearly failed. He also asked the court if he could self-surrender at a later date due to “health issues,” but the judge declined that, too. The Feds immediately took Sean into custody to begin serving his sentence.
